The linux desktop?

2.5.2010 13:43    Perma-Link
This is again a littlebit of a rant and hopefully a head up for people working on that stuff to eventually get the their stuff somehow working for KDE 4.5 and the next kernel releases.

Most of the time, I am working on windows nowadays during my day work (research). I am only using linux on my netbook (AsusEEE 1101HA) for some  system administration and webdesign tasks, but that more and more starts to suck. I know I am partly to blame my self, because I am using openuse factory and kde unstable from the OBS.

Things that suck:
*) I have to disable ACPI (grub acpi=off) with recent kernels (2.6.34-rcX) to get the kernel booting at all (kernels < 2.6.30 appear to work.)
    --> No battery status
*) After the login Plasma (just one directory view) and one konsole window take around 3 minutes to show up on screen and start getting usefull. During that time dbus-deamon and plasma-desktop have an equal share of around 45% CPU load.
*) Once KDE is up and running, I guess hal+solid is to blame, udevd needs at least 20% of the cpu, mostly it is around 50%. What is that damned thing doing all the time? I was beter of with static device nodes in the /dev directory.
*) For my emails needs, I am using mostly my webmail, sometimes thunderbird, because nothing else really copes with big imap folders in a somehow usable way. With that setup why do I need 57 akonadi processes running?

ps uxa | grep akonadi_vcard_resource | wc -l
29

ps uxa | grep akonadi_maildir_resource | wc -l
13

ps uxa | grep akonadi_kabc_resource | wc -l
10

(subtract one everywhere for the grep process appearing in the process listing)

*) I do not need nepomuk desktop search, I have everything in a logicaly sorted directory tree. I do not want to get a warning all the time, that I should enable it.

*) selecting files in dolphin and dragging them into the second split view for copying, works onreliable, only every third time or so.  Then moving the mouse back into the source view makes the view believe that it should to rubber band selectin, although the mouse button is not pressed anymore.

*) the kde network manager frontend still is unusable, nm-applet does a far better job

Gals and guys: we almost have KDE 4.5!!!!! This all still feels more like a .Oh release. I know unstable is unstable, but even the real releases I used before appeared to get worse and worse

You can do as much marketing and advertisement stuff, it will not help in anyway, as long as the base and the product itself are just broken. Splitting up libraries and so on does not help there in anyway. Focus on the functionality, before hyping stuff.
I hate to admit it, but nowadays even experimental gnome stuff is more usable than any experimental or enduser version of kde. But all in all macos and even windows are more usable than both of them nowadays.

I know there are bug trackers for the kernel and for kde, but for an enduser (like I am currently feeling), they are just black holes.
